MANUKA HONEY BIO ACTIVE 10+

Manuka Honey Bio Active 10+, 1.1 Pounds is a delicious blend of more than 50% raw Manuka honey with raw honey from the Rewarewa and Kamahi trees to bring you a tasty blend with a rich floral flavor. Manuka contain a unique antibacterial properties, Manuka honey has gotten a lot of press due to Dr. Oz talking about it on his TV show and posting videos on YouTube. Honey is known as the only food that does not spoil. It was discovered by archaeologists in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs and when tested in labs was found to still be edible after thousands of years. It can be stored at any temperature and does not ferment in extreme heat. It is a good preservative because it has antimicrobial properties and, as such, is regarded as a natural antibiotic. The home remedy of hot tea with lemon and honey for colds and coughs is not just an "old wives' tale." Lemon is a natural expectorant, as is hot liquid, and honey soothes and heals inflamed tissues. It is well known as extremely useful for wound treatment, as well.

What is special about Manuka honey is that it is harvested from bees that gather nectar from the Manuka bush, a shrub which grows in New Zealand. Even more than regular honey, Manuka honey is a powerful anti-bacterial treatment for ulcerated wounds, burns, gingivitis, acne, eczema, antibiotic-resistant infections, and hard-to-treat wounds such as those associated with deep vein thrombosis. Some studies have indicated it has anti-cancer properties as well.

I had heard about this type of honey from multiple health-information sources which I consider reliable, and I decided to try it out for myself. I wanted to have it on hand as a natural remedy for colds, flu, and skin care--for which I have already used regular honey with good success.

I also wanted to keep this particular honey in my pantry as a fire-wall against potential MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection, which antibiotics frequently cannot heal. According to the CDC, "MRSA skin infections can occur anywhere. However, some settings have factors that make it easier for MRSA to be transmitted. These factors, referred to as the 5 C's, are as follows: Crowding, frequent skin-to-skin Contact, Compromised skin (i.e., cuts or abrasions), Contaminated items and surfaces, and lack of Cleanliness. Locations where the 5 C's are common include schools, dormitories, military barracks, households, correctional facilities, and daycare centers." Multiple clinical trials have demonstrated that manuka honey is effective against over 250 strains of bacteria, but particularly MRSA, MSSA (methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus) and VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci).

Manuka honey included Manuka honey bio active 10+, 1.1 pounds has an extra ingredient that other types of honey do not have which has additional antimicrobial abilities. It has been dubbed the "Unique Manuka Factor (UMF)" because scientists have not yet isolated exactly what it is. Batches of manuka honey vary in how much UMF they have, so each batch is tested, ranked and priced according to how much it has. The more it has, the darker and thicker the honey--and the more expensive. A rating of UMF 10 or higher is recommended for medicinal use. This particular brand has earned a rating of 10+.

In addition to all its health and healing properties, this brand of manuka honey has a terrific taste. My husband and I use it in tea, in yogurt, on toast, and in hot cereal. It is not a low-calorie sweetener, but 60 calories per tablespoon is not that many when you consider that it also provides the body with anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects that are well documented. In short, we find it an extremely valuable "superfood" to add to our daily diet.
